Every Voter Counts

Reaching Every Voter (Clive Lord's Blog)

As a veteran of many by-election campaigns, I can say that this is among the better organized and supported. No doubt the unusual circumstances are playing a part, but at 30%, the positive response rate is higher than in any previous campaign. This probably explains why David Davis has been at pains to have as little direct contact with Shan as possible.

This strange election is riddled with unknown quantities. In the later stages media coverage has been better than in previous campaigns, and there has been reasonable local coverage.

It is difficult to assess how much difference this has made on the doorstep. Certainly many agree with my view: “Of 26 candidates, 24 have emerged specifically for the purpose of this election. One of the remaining two receives wall to wall coverage, but how much have you seen of the Green Party during its 35 years of existence?”

If we could reach every voter, we would give David Davis a shock. But my message “You have a unique opportunity to give the Green Party enough support to persuade the media that our voice should be heard at last” strikes a chord in many. Our problem is that we do need to speak to them to turn the massive latent support into votes.

Last minute telephone canvassing push?

There are currently almost 175 people at the Facebook group: if a proportion of those spend the next day telephone canvassing, might it just help us reach the tipping point and get Shan into Westminster?

"There are Five Pitfalls
For a (politician):

Recklessness,
Leading to
Destruction;

Cowardice,
Leading to
Capture;

A hot temper,
Prone to
Provocation;

A delicacy of honour,
Tending to
Shame;

A concern for his men,
Leading to trouble."

Which of these five pitfalls has David Davis committed?

Number one, perhaps?

When you're elected Shan, come to see us at I Knit London (Lower Marsh Street, parallel to Waterloo station).

Not far from Parliament for those trips down from Hull.

The local press may have been OK but the national have been pretty awful

Still, they have been pretty poor for Davis's campaign as well, which seems to have collapsed into a damp squib

Here is an example (from itv.con) of how the mainstream media marginalises opposition:

Davis is given airtime; Greens are not.

What kind of sham democracy is this?

Time for a SHAN democracy instead

How does it feel to be walking around in the 'terra incognita' of a Green constituency?

Well done Clive and Co. Keep going to the last minute, 9pm tomorrow or whenever. Then have a long summer break!

I hope you have a good size team of helpers. We have found a morning leaflet one lection day really helpful in elections in Lancaster. It reminds people an election is happening - helpful in this particular case plus it is easy to deliver in the most populated areas. Bit late to plan that now but if you have the energy and resources...
We found a nice aerial view to put on our morning leaflet, it looked quite artistic.

I have only voted on 50% votes in Parliament (well below average amongst MPs).

When you are elected tomorrow, can you give the people of H&H a better deal please?

Also, I owe the taxpayer £200,000 for the costs of the election.

Please send invoices to:
