Agriculture Bill demonstration - Northallerton. Sept 25th

Northallerton Demonstration against trashing of food and animal welfare standards by Agriculture Bill.   We are appalled at the casual destruction of years of hard work invested into the improvement of food and farming standards.  How can this government be so crass?

Ebony is NOT amused.
..and neither is he.

Email to Mr Johnson, PM, re exclusion of journalists from press conference.

Dear Boris Johnson,

You must be aware that to exclude journalists is moving in the direction of totalitarianism? You must know this if I do!  Why do you feel the need to do this?  Are you not proud of what you have done and intend to do?  I am truly shocked at where this country seems now to be heading. Mr Cummings was seen to be very unpleasant to a very polite reporter on the TV clip. We do not want to end up in the arms of Trump. We don't want our NHS sold off in bits. Please reconsider your direction of travel.
There's some excellent graffiti like this in Knaresborough on the wall between Iles Lane and the Pool .  Fear has got us to this terrible state of leaving our nearest trading neighbours.  Let's deal with it by pointing out who is stoking it up.  The recent clip of Cummings being rude to a polite reporter is chilling, as is the fact that Downing St picked and chose the journalists allowed into the recent press 'conference'.

So what can I do?  I'll share evidence of the fearmongering and lying, sign petitions, and join and support groups who are addressing  these vital issues.

At home I'll continue efforts to use fewer and fewer resources, in particular fuel and water.   e.g. I now collect the cold water at the start of a shower or kitchen tap and use it to flush the loo or water plants.  You might say this is paltry, but  it helps a bit and lots of bits add up...

Solar 'farms'.. extract from facebook thread.

  • Shan Oakes we need to PUSH HARD for change of policy at local and national level. If we don't put them on houses etc we will end up with them all over the land....its starting now, and its the wrong model. I've just written to the Harrogate Advertiser about it.

  • Hilary Gardner Shan Oakes yes where I was brought up in Kent they are putting on reclaimed farmland that used to be stunning salt marsh
  • Shan Oakes There is a huge solar 'farm' scheme planned for Cayton, north of Ripley...planning deadline 25th aug. Its the wrong place in my view. Instead we must get panels on all our roofs (all appropriate ones..and there are plenty of those) . ALL new builds should be built on a proper green basis ...but this government has no interest except self interest and their funders are the fossil fuel lot and their ilk.

  • Shan Oakes ...and more wind turbines needed too. But the model of letting huge companies just drop in schemes where they can get hold of land is the wrong model. Govt and local govt should be working proactively with communities to promote many and varied renewable energy schemes at local level. Of course, the neoliberal govts we have had recently don't want us mere mortals to have any autonomy (such as we would have if we had locally managed schemes and generation on or near our own dwellings) ..they want us tied in to the grid so that we are dependent and helpless.

Brexit...we need a people's vote now.

And the utter chaos continues.

There's only one way out of this mess: bring it back to the people.

RT if you want a #PeoplesVote!

Yorkshire recycling...

Leeds...Does the rest go into an incinerator now??

Environment and economy (the law of ones home)

The economy is a wholly owned subset of the environment....when will this be grasped by councils and government?

Pets or pests?

Lovely wren - killed by our cat...sigh....Yes it's natural, but it's not natural for there to be so many humans with countless pets...

Keep Harrogate Greenway traffic free

Harrogate Greenway under threat from possible new 'bypass' or 'relief road'.   See Malcolm Margolis's (on the right above) letters in the Harrogate Advertiser.  Let's keep this wonderful area free from roads and traffic.

Rouse Ye Women! - Townsend Theatre Productions - on tour

the Townsend Theatre productions company is currently in Harrogate until saturday, and on tour after that.  Don't miss this folk musical about the Black Country women chainmakers' strike...excellent.

some wise graffiti in Knaresborough.  We mustn't let propaganda mislead us.

topiary dragon - Knaresborough - looking startled for good reason....

Beech trees by the Nidd in February

This tree has made itself a buttress  - and possibly intends to make roots for a new tree....  Most trees don't get the chance ..

No Fracking Way - Day 2. North Yorkshire

March 9th.  The stalwarts cross the Ure at Boroughbridge, gather more walkers at Market Cross, progress to Staveley, Knaresborough and over a crocus- covered Harrogate Stray.....

Trust - do we deserve it?

Just some random pics of creatures who share our lives (there is a black cat sirtting on Bill's knee too)....just thinking how lucky we are that they trust us after all the grief that humans give other animals...

King of the Road?

High Bond End is a lovely walled medieval road winding up out of town. One can imagine horses and carts trudging up the hill…  but I took a long hard look at it  recently due to the death there of  Arthur, our cat,  and was appalled at the dangers inherent in it– particularly for pedestrians.  That stretch of road  is  extremely narrow, and like a helter skelter which forces walkers to cross at the most dangerous part because the already miniscule pavement disappears.    There are many walkers,  including  parents with small children moving between town and their homes up the Ripley Road.

Our lives are more and more dominated by traffic.  The road can’t be changed, but the regulations for it can.  It should have a lower speed and weight limit which should be enforced with cameras before there are more casualties.    Are we happy with the assumption that  (ever larger) motor vehicles are ‘king of the road’?

Blogging has been on backburner due to so many mayoral activities, but here's a start of a catch up...Just found this pic of our supper with the local scouts at their camp this september...photo taken by one of the pack.  Lovely evening with exploration of the woods, campfire, games and nourishing stew - great fun!
